Fantastic stories of Kanji (Dagashi

How have you been recently?

This time, I am glad to share with you some interesting things about Dagashi (駄菓子)
Dagashi was named in parallel to the expensive sweets that existed around 1711-1715.
Those days, sugar was too precious for the common people to use it,so at that time people would make sweets using cereals or starch syrup.
There were also sweets made of hoshii, which I explained in the last blog. People in northern areas commonly ate or kept these as preserved food.

When I was a child, it was a joyful time when I would buy dagashi paying only 5 yen (around 4 cents of a US Dollar) Oh, you can guess my age.

The other day, I was watching a TV program, they were comparing which kind of dagashi people in Italy and US liked more.
US Americans seem to like the vinegary taste of Sukonbu that is made of kelp.
Although, in Italy, most people who tried sukonbu, disliked it. The reason why, they say people who are keen on healthy food in US, prefer to eat konbu (Sea Tangle). And Italians like the taste of eel, because they are used to it. I can say I like sukonbu very much.
I would be pleased if you have the chance to try some Japanese Dagashi.

Fantásticas Historias de Kanji

Hola,
